Axiata considering taking part in MobiFone privatisation?

9 Jan 2015

Malaysian telecoms group Axiata is reportedly interested in the plan by MobiFone, Vietnam’s second largest cellco by subscribers, to go public, Tuoi Tre News reports, citing comments made by an executive with the Kuala Lumpur-based company. It is understood that Axiata could look to take part in MobiFone’s privatisation, with the former said to be committed to long-term cooperation with the Vietnamese company, Annis Sheikh Mohamed, Axiata’s head of corporate development, said during a meeting with Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang in Hanoi.

While Axiata is said to have been briefed on both the Vietnamese telecom industry and MobiFone’s privatisation plan at the meeting, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) is reportedly still gathering feedback from relevant bodies on MobiFone’s plan to go public, with final proposal expected to be submitted to, and approved by, the government by the end of 2015.
