Uganda implements One Network Area scheme

8 Jan 2015

Mobile operators in Uganda have abolished international roaming charges on calls to Rwanda and Kenya under the ‘One Network Area’ programme. Cellcos in Rwanda and Kenya implemented the scheme last year, acting on a decision by the Northern Corridor Summit Heads of State. ‘This is going to lower the costs of communication and revenue authorities will gain as is the case with Kenya,’ Uganda’s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Richard Kabonero, told Rwandan newspaper The New Times. South Sudan, Tanzania and Burundi are also considering joining the One Network Area initiative. Uganda’s mobile market is home to six cellular network operators, a data-only 4G provider and one mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).
