Telekom offers HD Voice on 2G alongside 3G, IP networks

8 Jan 2015

Telekom Deutschland has confirmed that it has enabled the HD Voice standard on its 2G GSM mobile network for callers in certain areas of Germany alongside its existing HD Voice service provided over its 3G UMTS and fixed line IP networks, Teltarif.de reports. In regions such as Bonn, Cologne and Hamburg, HD Voice calls are now transmitted over both 2G and 3G mobile networks, whilst Telekom says it will eventually enable HD Voice over its entire GSM network. HD Voice calls, which do not attract additional costs, are available if both parties are connected to a mobile/IP network supporting the platform (with HD Voice mobile-fixed IP interconnection available since November 2014). However, despite rival German mobile operators Vodafone and E-Plus also offering HD Voice, to date off-net mobile-to-mobile HD Voice calls have not been enabled.
