State telcos ordered to trim, optimise operations

6 Jan 2015

Thailand’s state enterprise ‘super board’ chaired by military junta leader Prayuth Chanocha has ordered state-owned telcos CAT Telecom and TOT to focus on providing wholesale services and ‘cease’ investing in areas such as cloud and hosting services to cut costs, TelecomAsia reports. The pair were ordered to focus on local fixed line services, broadband internet, international internet gateway (IIG), international cables, international voice calls and basic infrastructure. TOT and CAT must report back to the government within a month to assess whether their telecoms infrastructure and mobile operating businesses are viable or not. Various partnership proposals for the state-owned operations are on the table from private sector companies, especially in the mobile segment.
