PowerTel to launch mobile services?

2 Jan 2015

Zimbabwean internet service provider (ISP) PowerTel is preparing to offer mobile services, according to The Insider. The telco, which currently owns a 3,000km fibre backbone network and operates a CDMA-based broadband network, was granted a converged telecommunications licence by the Postal and Telecoms Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) in 2014, allowing it to offer voice as well as internet services.

Marketing manager Prosper Mutswiri noted that it has ‘always been PowerTel’s objective to offer total telecommunications solutions to Zimbabwe and Africa at large.’ Details of a provisional launch date have yet to emerge, although PowerTel claims to have negotiated interconnection agreements with the country’s incumbent mobile operators.
