Minister to reveal incentives for MTNL and BSNL

24 Dec 2014

India’s telecoms minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is expected to announce incentives for ailing state-backed telcos Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) during tomorrow’s ‘Good Governance Day’, the Economic Times writes, citing an unnamed source. The incentives will form part of the government’s efforts to revive the loss-making telcos, although no further details on the nature of the incentives was provided. The government is attempting to drag the two operators out of the red and return them to profitability and, to that end, has refunded the pair for the return of their wireless broadband spectrum and has taken on MTNL’s pension liabilities.
