Austrian-backed wireless operator Mobilkom Serbia, which operates under the brand name VIP Mobile, has announced that it has recently completed the modernisation of its 2G and 3G networks across the country, resulting in improved outdoor and indoor coverage, as well as better voice quality and faster average data transmission speeds of 10Mbps. According to a company press release, VIP’s network has been modernised at more than 550 sites in 21 towns, while over 350 new 2G and 3G base stations were built along the main traffic routes and in the smaller towns. The cellco added that its HSPA+ network now covers 82% of the Serbian population, and its improved network equipment also supports 4G LTE technology. ‘VIP has invested almost EUR827 million [USD1.01 billion] into the operations, which still makes us the biggest greenfield investor in Serbia to date,’ commented the operator’s director and CEO, Dejan Turk, adding: ‘Our strategic focus remains on the provision of best customer experience which implies further improvement of the network as well as innovative offer. During the next year we are going to invest as much as EUR27 million into our network.’ In 2015 VIP plans to modernise equipment at a further 800 sites across Serbia and construct more than 450 new base stations.
