AT&T, others interested in Nextel assets?

Salvador Alvarez, general director of Nextel de Mexico, has revealed that a number of companies have expressed an interest in acquiring the assets of the country’s smallest mobile operator by customers, El Universal reports. In September Nextel’s parent, US-based NII Holdings, filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, before announcing last month that it had reached an agreement on the key terms of a reorganisation plan to emerge from bankruptcy. Alvarez said that as part of this process the firm is required to be open to offers for the company’s assets. One potential bidder is AT&T, which last month hinted that a move for Nextel de Mexico is viewed as a realistic possibility, as it seeks to expand its presence in the country after agreeing to acquire third-largest player Grupo Iusacell for USD2.5 billion.
