Nexttel to lose 3G exclusivity on 14 December

5 Dec 2014

Cameroon’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Jean-Pierre Biyiti Bi-Essam, has said that Viettel Cameroon, which operates under the brand Nexttel, will lose its two-year monopoly on the provision of UMTS services on 14 December, writes Journal du Cameroun. Nexttel, which is majority-owned by Vietnamese telecoms firm Viettel Group, was awarded its mobile licence in December 2012, but a number of setbacks meant that the cellco did not launch commercial 2G and 3G services until September 2014. The minister also revealed that the licences of incumbent cellcos MTN Cameroon – owned by South Africa’s MTN Group – and French-owned Orange Cameroun are currently being renegotiated to include the provision of 3G services.
