Une-EPM, Tigo set to relinquish 50MHz of spectrum post-merger

27 Nov 2014

Recently merged Colombian telcos Une-EPM and Tigo Colombia have reportedly agreed to relinquish a 50MHz block of spectrum in the 2500MHz band, El Tiempo reports. The decision was ordered by the Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC), after the spectrum holdings owned by the combined entity grew to 135MHz, well above the stipulated 85MHz limit.

Going forward, it is anticipated that the spectrum will be offered to Avantel and Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB), both of which currently hold 30MHz frequency blocks. Following a final decision from the Ministerio de Tecnologias de la Informacion y las Comunicaciones (MinTic), the operators will have two years and four months to transfer the frequencies.
