Our Telekom selects NEC for microwave backhaul upgrade

14 Nov 2014

Solomon Telekom, which offers fixed and mobile services under the brand name Our Telekom, has selected NEC Australia to deploy microwave radio technology in three of the country’s largest provinces in order to boost mobile and fixed line broadband capacity across the Solomon Islands. Under the plan, NEC will supply and install its iPasolink IP microwave transmission solution as the core of a major network upgrade that will support over 100 base transceiver stations (BTS) in the territory and extend the reach of Our Telekom’s domestic fixed network. The pair say that as a result of the upgrade, NEC’s iPasolink system will boost capacity to BTS in Malaita Province – one of the largest regions in the territory – with backhaul links with an initial 500Mbps capacity, upgradeable to 1Gbps and a large number of last mile links that will initially deliver 50Mbps-100Mbps and connect to its existing and new BTS; Honiara Province, the Solomon Islands’ capital on Guadalcanal Island; and Western Province, which encompasses several islands.
