Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it will provide Liquid Telecom with upgrades to previously deployed dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) technologies for the expansion of its networks in Kenya and Uganda. The DWDM upgrades will enable Liquid Telecom to add capacity needed to meet the demand for broadband services in Nairobi and Mombasa, as well as address new markets and business opportunities. The technology will be used to provide the small office and home office (SOHO) markets with high speed internet services. Liquid Telecom is also deploying GPON technology supplied by Alcatel-Lucent in Nairobi. ‘As a company Liquid Telecom is focused on building Africa’s digital future and so we’re always looking to upgrade and expand our networks to best serve the needs of current and future customers,’ commented Ben Roberts, Group CTO of Liquid Telecom, adding: ‘We chose Alcatel-Lucent for this project not only because it is the incumbent supplier, but also for its design expertise in DWDM, excellent GPON market reputation, and for the value and scalability of the solutions.’
