Indonesian CDMA wireless service provider Telekom PT SmartFren (Smartfren) is launching a new pre-paid voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) platform for smartphones, in partnership with One Horizon Group. The bandwidth-efficient VoIP smartphone app, branded SmartCall, will be available as an over-the-top (OTT) Android App it says, available from the Google Play Store. Once installed, Smartfren users will have a ‘truly mobile’ VoIP smartphone add-on and will receive a new Virtual SIM telephone number from the carrier and be able to top-up from any Smartfren retail outlet or on-line store. The operator offers cellular and limited mobility fixed wireless access (FWA) services, and claims the largest CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network coverage in Indonesia. It was also one of the first operators in the world to an EV-DO Rev B upgrade (offering download speed of up to 14.7Mbps) and the first CDMA operator offering BlackBerry services in Indonesia. Its service area covers most of the populated areas of Java, Bali, Sumatera and the major cities in Kalimantan and Sulawesi.
