Iraqi cellco Asiacell has been awarded a licence to provide 3G services using the 2100MHz band, the operator announced in a press release. The nation’s number two mobile operator said it plans to launch commercial service in early 2015, echoing market leader Zain’s plan to begin offering 3G services in January 2015. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Asiacell – part of the Ooredoo group – claimed 11.6 million subscribers at the end of June 2014, behind Zain’s 16.1 million subscribers.
