MTN, Vodacom consider Oi/PT Unitel stake, sources claim

A report by Bloomberg says that South African telecoms groups MTN and Vodacom (itself part of the UK’s Vodafone Group) are studying a purchase of Brazilian group Oi SA’s Africatel Holdings business which it acquired via its ongoing merger with Portugal Telecom (PT), according to four people familiar with the matter. Oi publicly put its 75% stake in Africatel up for sale last month. Three of the unidentified sources said that MTN and Vodacom are interested in acquiring the most lucrative Africatel asset, namely a minority stake in Angola’s largest wireless carrier Unitel, although one source said that a transaction is not imminent. Spokespeople for MTN, Vodacom and Oi declined to comment on the story.
