Cosmote displays speeds over 200Mbps via 4G

27 Oct 2014

Greek mobile operator Cosmote has exhibited the capability of its 4G LTE network to produce speeds of over 200Mbps at the 16th InfoCom World Conference, following its acquisition of new frequencies in the 800MHz and 2600MHz spectrums. The company piloted a short range base transceiver station (BTS) and revealed that a 4GB movie could be downloaded in less than three minutes, and over 150 songs of 8MB downloaded in one minute. The cellco further divulged that it can reach speeds of 300Mbps and will be starting ‘pilot tests immediately, so that these speeds can be commercially available in selected areas in the first half of 2015.’ The EUR135 million (USD171 million) spectrum investment announced earlier this month is allowing Cosmote to test faster speeds and to focus on expanding its 4G coverage from its current 65% up to 70% by the end of 2014.
