Sri Lankan mobile operator Etisalat Lanka has signed up to use rival Mobitel’s ‘mCash’ mobile money platform. Subscribers to the United Arab Emirates-backed operator now have the chance to pay Etisalat bills and top up their phone services at Mobitel mCash outlets across Sri Lanka or by dialling a special number. As reported by CommsUpdate in March 2014, Etisalat Lanka previously formed a similar partnership with another rival, Dialog Axiata, offering Etisalat customers mobile money services over the existing ‘eZcash’ platform operated by the island’s cellular market leader.
In a related development, further expansion of mCash services has been announced in a press release from Mobitel (a division of Sri Lanka Telecom), revealing its partnership with the Pensions Department of Sri Lanka to launch a pension disbursement service which will allow customers to receive government pensions directly into their mCash accounts.
