Algerie Telecom (AT), the country’s incumbent fixed line operator, has installed 304km of fibre-optic cabling in the province (wilaya) of Bechar, Agence Ecofin reports. The deployment, which aims to improve telecoms services in remote areas, extends to nine new locations, each of which have a population of over 1,000 inhabitants, namely: Lahmar, Mougheul, Tabelbella, Mrija, Zaghmra, Ougarta, Hassi Menounat, Bchir and El-Bayadha.

Meanwhile, AT’s wireless unit Mobilis has reportedly announced the upcoming deployment of 44 new base transceiver stations (BTS) in the province in order to improve the mobile coverage in the area. As reported by CommsUpdate last month, Mobilis has disclosed plans to introduce 3G services in 16 additional wilayas (including Bechar) from December 2014.
