Aliant leasing Ontera network to Eastlink to keep comptroller sweet

6 Oct 2014

Canadian telco Bell Aliant has agreed to lease a significant portion of Northern Ontario-based Ontera’s fibre network to cableco Eastlink for a 20-year period to win the approval of the Competition Bureau for its planned acquisition of local government-owned Ontera. Total Telecom writes that the companies brokered the deal after the bureau warned that the planned takeover of Ontera by Aliant – announced in April – would impact on competition in 16 Ontario communities where the firms are the only two backhaul providers.
