Orange France has reached an agreement with leading video-on-demand (VoD) provider Netflix, which would allow subscribers to the telco’s Livebox to gain unlimited access to Netflix’s over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service from November 2014. CEO Stephane Richard was cited by Le Monde as saying: ‘The negotiations were tough but are finished. There is no reason to penalise Orange customers, who will have a much better experience using Netflix through [our] set-top box.’ The new development comes two weeks after rival Bouygues Telecom signed a similar deal with the US-based VoD provider.
As reported by CommsUpdate, on 15 September 2014 Bouygues revealed that subscribers to its Bbox Sensation product and future users of soon-to-launch Android Box would gain unlimited access to Netflix’s offering. The deal was first of its kind in the French market, and in the 15 days following its launch Netflix reportedly signed up 100,000 subscribers, domestic newspaper Le Figaro claimed.
