Virgin proves increasingly popular in Colombia as user base passes 1m; MVNO sector in rude health

2 Oct 2014

Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Virgin Mobile Colombia has posted significant gains in recent quarters, with its subscriber base reaching 1.235 million as of 30 June. According to data from industry regulator Ministry of Information Technology and Communication (MinTIC), Virgin’s user base has almost doubled year-on-year; it stood at 683,186 in June 2013. Elsewhere in the sector, Uff Movil claimed 416,309 customers, while Exito had notched up 225,573 users by mid-year. ETB brought up the rear, with a modest 34,684 subscribers. TeleGeography notes that Virgin piggybacks on Movistar’s network, while the other three MVNOs all utilise Tigo’s capacity.

Meanwhile, the country’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) sector has also demonstrated strong growth in recent quarters, with the total number of 4G users reaching 585,901 at 30 June. This represents net additions of more than half a million year-on-year, with a figure of 82,812 reported by MinTic in June 2013.
