Expresso Telecom employees in jail over USD1.378m embezzlement allegations

According to an unconfirmed report from Agence Ecofin, three employees of Sudatel-backed operator Expresso Telecom (Senegal) are being held in prison on charges on embezzlement to the tune of XOF700 million (USD1.378 million). The three employees include the company’s director Bangaly Toure, his wife and another leading official, all of whom have been detained under caution pending an investigation following a complaint by Expresso Telecom for misappropriation of funds.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of June 2014, Expresso Telecom was the third-ranked mobile operator in the country with a total of 2.892 million users, a market share of 20.15%, up just 44,078 from three months before. However, it trails behind Orange Senegal with 7.905 million subscribers at the same date and Tigo with over 3.558 million.
