T-Mobile US had its strongest month ever in August 2014, John Legere, the company’s president and chief executive, announced during a press conference in San Francisco to introduce the next phase of the company’s ‘UnCarrier’ strategy. According to CNET, Legere confirmed that the company added 2.75 million new customers in the month of August alone – the largest number of new customers that the company has ever added in one month. TeleGeography notes that the mobile operator has posted strong net adds in recent quarters, increasing its user base by 1.245 million in 2Q14, 2.171 million (1Q14), 1.473 million (4Q13) and 1.016 million (3Q13).
The latest phase of T-Mobile’s strategic shift – ‘UnCarrier 7.0’ – has seen the cellco embrace Wi-Fi calling, with the firm allowing ‘Simple Choice’ customers to upgrade to a Wi-Fi-capable smartphone if they do not already have one. As part of the ‘Wi-Fi Unleashed’ push, T-Mobile is also offering customers a proprietary ‘Cellspot’ router for their home that it says is like a ‘personal’ T-Mobile tower. The Cellspot is free to post-paid customers with a USD25 deposit. Pre-paid customers can purchase it for USD99.
Flamboyant T-Mobile boss Legere continued to provoke his rival operators, commenting: ‘Wi-Fi Unleashed is a game changer. This is like adding millions of towers to our network in a single day. The difference between us and the traditional carriers is that they’ll do everything they can to make more money off you. We’ll do everything we can to solve your problems, and today, that’s about uniting Wi-Fi with our data strong network for unprecedented coverage.’
