8 Aug 2014

Brazil’s Ministry of Communications yesterday announced its approval of six projects – worth BRL450 million (USD197 million) – to bring high speed 4G LTE mobile internet to 14 Brazilian states, using the 450MHz band. The initiative forms part of the Regime Special Tax National Broadband Program (REPNBL), and here involves six projects currently under development by two operators to bring the internet to 1,611 municipalities in 14 states of the North, Northeast, and Midwest Sul of Brazil. By the end of this year, the plan envisages covering 60% of Brazilian municipalities with LTE-450 technology and to connect 100% of municipalities by the end of 2015. Ultimately, LTE-450 will serve an estimated 27.3 million rural population. The project also envisages connecting 73,369 schools and 10,928 health units.
