MPT to drop lottery for SIM sales

Local news outlet Eleven Myanmar writes that state-backed telco Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) will soon stop its practice of selling SIMs via a lottery system, a strategy it adopted to cope with high levels of demand outstripping its limited supply. As noted by CommsUpdate earlier this month, MPT has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM), a joint venture of Japanese firms KDDI and Sumitomo, that will help develop MPT’s business and infrastructure. MPT’s monopoly on the wireless market is due to end soon with the imminent launch of two new foreign-owned operators, Telenor and Ooredoo, both of which are planning to begin selling SIM cards in August-September.
