PLDT to deploy 5,000 new LTE base stations

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has announced plans to roll out 5,000 new 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) as part of a nationwide expansion push. The base stations are likely to be a mixture of fixed-wireless Time Duplex-Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) towers and fully mobile infrastructure, as utilised by cellular subsidiary Smart Communications.

Originally offered in Metro Manila in April this year, the TD-LTE network – branded PLDT HOME Bro Ultera – now covers provincial areas such as Cagayan Province in Northern Luzon and Davao del Sur in Mindanao. Following the deployment, PLDT hopes to increase its footprint to 50% of the country.

PLDT President & CEO Napoleon L Nazareno commented: ‘This aggressive expansion of our LTE network is part of our thrust to provide broadband connectivity to the whole country. It complements our efforts to provide connectivity to all Filipino homes through fixed lined services like our fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and the Next Generation Network (NGN) services.’
