Viettel proposes off-net call rate reduction

Vietnam’s largest mobile network operator by subscribers, Viettel, has requested permission from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) to reduce the rate it charges subscribers for calls to other networks. VietNamNet Bridge reports that the proposed rates will be equal to those charged by the military-run operator for on-net calls; at present pre-paid calls are priced at VND1,466 (USD0.07, on-net) and VND1,651 per minute (off-net), while post-paid calls cost VND990 (on-net) and VND1,200 per minute (off-net). Viettel’s deputy director Hoang Son was quoted as saying that if the new charges are approved, the company would initially lose about VND77 billion in revenue each month, ‘but in the long run it will help increase revenue thanks to the consumption stimulus.’
