According to the Irish Times, the broadcaster Setanta Sports is readying itself to enter the Irish cellular market as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) piggybacking on 3 Ireland’s network to offer a range of own-brand services to customers. Whilst no date for launch has been set, both firms have been holding talks over the past few months to broker a deal, with Setanta hopeful of launching a mobile service by the end of this year. The broadcaster is believed to be looking to offer a suite of services such as TV, voice calls and mobile internet access, including its application/online player ‘Setanta Go’ that could be used as a second screen service to existing subscribers, or be sold on a standalone basis to non-subscribers. The paper says that the broadcaster has hired consultant Leo Hassett to advise it on its mobile plans.
