Vodafone Netherlands has announced that it has begun deploying small cells in the Randstad, a conurbation in the Netherlands consisting of the country’s four largest cities – Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht – and the surrounding areas. Initially the equipment is being rolled out in the centre of Amsterdam, with work to begin in Rotterdam in around two months’ time. Having set out plans to rollout ‘several hundred’ small cells, Vodafone Netherlands chief technical officer Mallik Rao was cited as saying that the development had been prompted by rapidly increasing data needs in big cities. Looking ahead the operator has also indicated that it will deploy the technology where capacity or coverage of its 3G network is inadequate.
