MTN warned over promo ban, dominance violations

24 Jun 2014

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, MTN Nigeria, that it may face sanctions if it continues to violate obligations regarding its dominant status, as well as a ban on offering promotions. Local newspaper This Day reports that the NCC directed MTN to withdraw all promotions offered on its network by 20 June and ordered the South African-owned company to ensure full compliance with the obligations applied under the NCC’s dominance determination, which took effect on 1 May 2013 and designated MTN as a dominant provider in the mobile voice segment. As such, MTN is required to adhere to obligations of accounting separation, and must offer the same rates for both on-net and off-net tariffs, as well as submit details on specific aspects of its operations as the need arises.
