Vodafone NL demonstrates LTE-A in Amsterdam

20 Jun 2014

Vodafone’s Dutch mobile business intends to launch evolved Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) services in the Netherlands later this year, under the name 4G+, Telecompaper reports without citing its sources. Demonstrating LTE-A at its HQ in Amsterdam, Vodafone NL says that the faster service – which will offer peak theoretical speeds of 225Mbps – will initially launch in ten cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Leiden, Eindhoven, Den Bosch and Schiphol, before being rolled out to a further 50 smaller cities by the year end. Vodafone’s evolved 4G service utilises carrier aggregation (CA), combining 10MHz of bandwidth in the 800MHz band for up to 75Mbps, with 20MHz of 1800MHz spectrum, for a further 150Mbps. In addition, the cellco says that from the second half of the year it will begin tests of Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) ahead of an expected commercial launch in mid-2015.
