MCIT launches tender for Afghan IXP

19 Jun 2014

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the supply and installation of equipment for the National Internet Exchange of Afghanistan (NIXA), including the National Internet Registry of Afghanistan (NIRA). The tender covers the provision of the relevant hardware and software, as well the training of MCIT staff. The MCIT will select the provider under the Quality and Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) model, and has set a deadline of 28 July for proposals. In its RFP the MCIT noted that at present every internet service provider (ISP) is using its own gateway, meaning that all traffic is currently being routed globally. By establishing a local internet exchange point (IXP), ISPs will be able to route local traffic within the country.
