Thai telecoms and pay-TV solutions provider Planet Communications Asia (Planetcomm) has selected the Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) and T-Series optical network terminals (ONTs) for a gigabit passive optical network (GPON) residential and business fibre deployment in Thailand’s major cities including Bangkok and Pattaya. According to a press release, Planetcomm plans to expand the fibre network to meet the demands of Thailand’s growing economy by reaching over 100,000 homes with fibre within the next five years and begin delivering advanced IP services ‘in the next year’. Planetcomm adds that it aims to roll out fibre for local service providers to deliver managed services such as IPTV, while working with property developers to offer high-end services in new urban housing and industrial developments. In addition, Planetcomm hopes to enable new fibre-based services in existing residential developments by replacing cable and copper with fibre to provide high quality, ultra-fast broadband and enable IPTV, VoIP, and other advanced broadband services. Bangkok-based Planetcomm, established in 1994, currently operates as a digital TV and telecom systems vendor and solutions provider for companies in the ASEAN Economic Cooperation region, partnering international vendors such as Cisco, Polycom, GE MDS, Codan, Comtech EF Data and Xicom.
