Angola’s largest mobile operator Unitel has announced reaching the milestone of ten million customers. CEO Tony Dolton said of the achievement: ‘In just over a decade, Unitel has become part of Angolans’ daily lives, through ground-breaking telecommunications products and services and a strong engagement with the community.’ Having previously launched 3G, 3.5G and 4G networks in Angola, Unitel recently began trialling LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology, while it has also introduced a diverse range of services such as an online educational platform, the ‘Smartphone 4Afrika’ device/local content range, and more recently a music portal, while establishing the ‘e-NET’ programme for free internet access in schools. Unitel employs over 2,500 people in Angola, which it says makes it the biggest private company in the country, while its international arm has recently established a licensed subsidiary in Sao Tome & Principe, following the launch of its first foreign operation in Cape Verde in 2012.
