Zong gearing up for 3G launch

12 Jun 2014

China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), which operates under the Zong brand name, is expected to commercially launch its 3G network in Lahore and Karachi on Friday with Islamabad to follow within a week, ProPakistani writes without giving its source. The Chinese-backed cellco walked away from April’s spectrum auctions with the largest share of frequencies, snapping up 2×10MHz of 2100MHz spectrum for 3G services, as well as 2×10MHz in the 1800MHz range for 4G services, the only 4G licence to be sold. Despite its success at the tender, Zong was beaten to the punch by Ufone, the mobile division of fixed line incumbent Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL), which launched Pakistan’s first 3G network in late May. Indeed, Zong has remained tight-lipped about his rollout and launch plans, except to reveal that it intends to invest nearly USD1 billion on the deployment.
