Airtel DRC receives Movirtu ‘virtual SIM’ solution; service already live in Madagascar

11 Jun 2014

Following the signing of a group-wide agreement with UK-based virtual SIM solutions firm Movirtu, Airtel Africa has extended the service to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The solution allows mobile operators to provide services to users who cannot afford to purchase a handset, while also allowing subscribers to keep multiple numbers on the same phone. As such, a virtual user can temporarily activate their number on a friend’s phone, or a handset can be shared amongst a group of individuals. The virtual SIM system allows access to phone calls, text messages and value-added services (VAS) such as mobile banking. Prior to the DRC launch, the Movirtu solution was successfully introduced in Madagascar.
