VIPnet announces completion of NFV trial

4 Jun 2014

Croatian cellular operator VIPnet has announced the successful completion of a trial of network functions virtualisation (NFV) technology. Parent company Telekom Austria said VIPnet has demonstrated HD video streaming made possible by combining 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology and NFV. It says the technology will enable customers to record and directly stream their smartphone content and multimedia onto cloud-based storage via a virtualised infrastructure, meaning consumers will no longer need to offload content from their smartphones to their computer. Gunther Ottendorfer, CTO of Telekom Austria Group, commented: ‘We are absolutely confident that the NFV technology is a defining trend in the mobile industry. We are therefore very pleased with VIPnet’s initiative to explore and implement NFV.’
