Tata to retain DOCOMO name for a year

27 May 2014

Tata Group has agreed a deal with partners NTT DOCOMO to allow the company to continue using the Tata DOCOMO brand for at least a year after the Japanese company exits the joint venture, the Economic Times cites sources familiar with the matter as saying. DOCOMO announced its intention to exit the loss-making Tata Teleservices (TTSL) last month and, under the terms of their 2009 joint venture agreement, Tata must either purchase the stake or find a buyer. If a buyer cannot be found by the end of June this year, Tata Group will have to pay upwards of INR72.5 billion (USD1.238 billion) for DOCOMO’s stake, plus an additional royalty fee for the continued use of the DOCOMO brand.
