Unitel poised to launch in Sao Tome and Principe

22 May 2014

Unitel STP, which was awarded Sao Tome and Principe’s second fixed and mobile telecoms licence in March 2013, is set to begin operating tomorrow (23 May). Macauhub cites a statement from the company as saying that the country’s president Manuel Pinto da Costa will make the first international call during the launch event, before the mobile service is launched on a commercial basis. Unitel STP is a subsidiary of Unitel International Holding, itself backed by Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos. It will end the monopoly held by Companhia Santomense de Telecomunicacoes (CST), a joint venture between Portugal Telecom (PT) and the government, since its establishment on 1 January 1990.
