South Korean multi-service operator KT Corp has revealed plans to invest KRW4.5 trillion (USD3.9 billion) to introduce an internet service which it has claimed will be ten times faster than existing technologies. According to Yonhap News Agency, KT plans to establish what it has termed ‘GiGatopia’, a society in which all humans and devices will be connected via high speed network. To achieve this lofty goal, the operator has said that not only will it introduce faster fixed line internet speeds, its wireless network will also be able to reach giga-level downlink rates by combining LTE and Wi-Fi networks using the GiGA Path technology.
Alongside enhancing speeds via new technology deployments, KT has also outlined plans to roll out Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) technology by June 2015. It claims this will allow users to enjoy video contents at ten times the resolution compared with existing digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) technology.
