A total of 149 communication towers will be deployed in the Sarawak region of Malaysia this year at a cost of around MYR200 million (USD62 million), according to Bernama, as part of plans to boost mobile voice and internet accessibility in rural regions. Adimam Ajem, the director of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was cited as saying that the towers represented a portion of the 400 that are expected to be constructed nationwide this year, while adding: ‘This will enable more rural folks in isolated areas of the Sibu, Kapit, Miri, and Sarikei divisions as well as those in surrounding areas to enjoy better cellular coverage and internet services.’
