Vodafone Portugal strikes fibre deal with dstelecom

15 May 2014

Vodafone Portugal has entered into a partnership agreement with regional indirect access provider dstelecom to provide triple-play services over its purpose-built Next Generation Network (NGN), which covers 44 municipalities in the Alto Minho and Interior Norte regions. Vodafone will commence services in Arcos de Valdevez, Paredes da Coura, Ponte da Barca and Tabuaco, before increasing its coverage to a total of 200,000 homes in 79 municipalities. Vodafone Portugal plans to pass 1.5 million homes with its own fixed network by mid-2015.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, dstelecom (also known as DST, the subsidiary of a national construction group), was awarded European Union funding in February 2010 to support the deployment of an NGN in the North, Alentejo and Algarve regions. dstelecom was obliged to manage the infrastructure using an open access principle, to ensure a level playing field; the management contract lasts 20 years.
