NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s leading cellco in terms of subscribers, has announced that it is set to launch voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology in late June. According to a company press release, users are likely to benefit from download speeds of up to 150Mbps during VoLTE voice calls, while the service will also provide subscribers with ‘Area Mail’ disaster-information notifications while they are making calls. Four smartphones and two tablets in DOCOMO’s summer line-up will be compatible with the VoLTE service after a software update, which is currently scheduled to take place in late June. Further, the operator has revealed that additional data charges for the VoLTE service will be waived until September 2015.

In other news, NTT DOCOMO has announced that it will re-organise its operational structure in order to boost its revenues by establishing four new divisions, namely: the R&D Innovation division, which comprises the R&D Strategy department and Service Innovation department; the Service Design department; the Frontline Support department; and the Billing Service department. ‘The new units will strengthen and accelerate the creation of services that will enable customers to enjoy smarter living through innovative mobile solutions’, a statement clarified.
