Afghanistan has announced that its first satellite, Afghansat 1, which was launched earlier this year, has commenced commercial operations. The platform, which was deployed under a multi-year agreement with Eutelsat, will provide digital broadcast services as well as voice and data connectivity. The satellite covers central Asia and the Middle East and is designed to be in orbit for seven years, with the government already planning the launch of Afghansat 2.
