The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is reportedly considering a bid to take a stake in the Serbian operator Telekom Srbija if the government does decide to push ahead with the privatisation of the fixed and mobile provider. As reported by CommsUpdate last week, Serbia’s minister of trade and telecommunications Rasim Ljajic told press that the state will not renew its efforts to privatise Telekom Srbija unless the government is convinced that the process will be completed, noting that ‘another unsuccessful attempt would have devastating economic consequences’. Jean-Marc Peterschmitt, EBRD’s managing director for Central and South Eastern Europe, is quoted by Balkans.com as saying that Telekom Srbija would be likely to attract a large number of bidders should it come up for sale, with EBRD keen to take part in the process.
