Du posts 12% rise in Q1 revenue, EBITDA

United Arab Emirates telecoms operator Du has reported revenue of AED2.955 billion (USD805.7 million) for the first quarter of 2014, an increase of 12.5% from AED2.626 billion in the year-ago period. Growth was driven by mobile revenue, which rose 8.3% year-on-year to AED2.228 billion, including mobile data turnover of AED639 million, up by 21.3%. EBITDA grew 12.3% from AED1.053 billion in 1Q13 to AED1.183 billion twelve months later, while net profit after royalty totalled AED490 million in the first three months of 2014, up 4.8% year-on-year. ‘This quarter we achieved positive revenue growth and healthy levels of profitability driven by our strategic focus on enhancing the customer experience,’ commented Du’s CEO Osman Sultan, adding: ‘We have begun 2014 on a strong footing with double digit growth in revenues and EBITDA by developing innovative propositions for customers and delivering on our commitment to focusing on operational efficiencies. In 2014 we will continue to work towards Vision 2021 so that we actively engage with plans to implement a ‘Smart Government’ across the UAE and transform Dubai into a ‘Smart City.’

Du said it added 306,308 net active mobile customers during the three-month period, bringing the total wireless subscriber base to 7.550 million at 31 March 2014; post-paid subscribers now represent 9.5% of total mobile users, compared to 8.3% in Q1 2013. Fixed line customers totalled 612,000 at the end of March 2014, compared to 572,000 a year earlier.
