Zimbabwean operator TelOne has commissioned an infrastructure upgrade project as part of a multi-million dollar deal with vendors Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent, which will see its fixed line capacity reach one million, local newspaper the Chronicle reports. According to the article, the first phase of the upgrade plan will be completed this month, with TelOne managing director Hampton Mhlanga saying: ‘We are targeting raising our subscriber base to one million from the present 350,000 once the upgrade is complete. Part of the work will also see two core switching centres being put in place connecting the 153 exchanges on the ground.’ The executive added that the upgrade project involves the deployment of a fibre link running from Mutare through Harare, Kwekwe and Gweru to Bulawayo which is almost completed; ADSL expansion from Harare and Bulawayo to the other cities will follow.
