Consumer association logs complaint against Algerie Telecom

Algeria’s Consumer Protection Association (Federation Algerienne des Consommateurs, or Apoce) has logged a written complaint with telecoms watchdog the Autorite de Regulation de la Poste et des Telecoms (ARPT) and the Directorate General of Economic Control and Fraud (DGCERF) against incumbent fixed line service provider Algerie telecom (AT). Local news source Maghreb Emergent reports that the complaint refers to AT’s recently launched ‘Idoom’ fixed broadband service; according to Apoce, customers have been forced to buy a new modem if they wish to subscribe to a faster service. Another issue raised in the referral is the recent limit on downloads, with numerous AT users reporting top transmission speeds via peer-to-peer (P2P) sites of just 20kbps. The association has urged the ARPT to intervene and open an investigation into the matter.
