Viettel finally sets launch date

4 Apr 2014

Peru is set to see the long-delayed launch of its fourth wireless provider, Vietnamese-backed Viettel Peru, by the end of July this year. TeleSemana cites Gonzalo Ruiz Diaz, the head of telecoms watchdog Osiptel, as saying that Viettel will launch on 26 July in seven major cities, including the capital. The official explained that Viettel had struggled to secure permissions from municipal authorities for the installation of towers. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Viettel was awarded 25MHz of 1900MHz spectrum in January 2011 and went on to win additional frequencies in the 900MHz range. In securing its concessions, Viettel pledged to provide free broadband services to more than 4,500 educational and healthcare institutions for ten years, and is obliged to provide mobile services to 48 unserved or underserved rural districts within its first five years of operation.
