ANE to auction 700MHz spectrum in early 2015

Colombia’s National Spectrum Agency (ANE) has announced plans to auction additional frequencies for wireless services in 2015, although detailed plans for the sale will be available later this year, La Republica writes. Long Term Evolution (LTE)-suitable frequencies in the 700MHz range is expected to generate the greatest interest – the nation’s existing 4G providers have called for the frequencies to be allocated as soon as possible to enhance their LTE services – although the airwaves available for sale also includes 70MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz range, 5MHz in the 1900MHz, and 40MHz of 2500MHz band frequencies. The authority is also considering offering 10MHz of 450MHz band airwaves, 34MHz in the 850MHz range and an additional 20MHz in the 900MHz. According to ANE’s director Oscar Leon, the authority is looking to make more spectrum available to providers, which will in-turn improve the range and quality of services, as well as paving the way for greater competition in the sector.
